It is very challenging to provide value in a book to such a diverse audience, but this book is a solid introduction for technologists, managers, and lay-persons. I would recommend this book to anyone with a desire or need to understand Silicon Photonics.
Frankly, there are few resources out there on the subject matter for novices. For a non-technical novice, you will need Google on standby. I think the book does a decent overview of the space and the implications. I think this is a good starting point for people looking to get smart on the space.Maybe edition 2 will have a bigger appendix explaining some of the technology?
So much has been written recently about Silicon Photonics that one wonders what would a new book add. That is why I started reading this 2007 book with skepticism, but was pleasantly surprised to see that this small volume (8 chapters and 208 pages) does have a lot to add and found it to be one of the most readable technical texts that I have read recently.The book covers Silicon photonics from technology, business/opportunities and applications perspective. There is limited (but sufficient) coverage of the science and fundamentals of optical devices and communications in one chapter (Chapter 3) and in the Appendix.There is some excellent historical treatment and a look into the future of Silicon photonics technologies and applications and there is some serious studies of market opportunities across wide ranging applications, from chip-to-chip communications to interconnects, data centres and the now ubiquitous cloud computing.This is a clearly written book with outstanding lucidity, a comprehensive set of references and helpful "Key Takeaways" at the end of each of its eight chapters.Highly recommended for fast tracking people into the technical and technological aspects subject and will be well suited to those who wish to learn about Silcon Photonics and those looking into making investments or starting businesses in the area. If you are a researcher into the technology (i.e you know the subject well) the book will add to your knowledge through giving you a different perspective.
