This is the third in the Pimsleur French series that I have purchased and I am almost half way through this one. There are 30 lessons of about 30 minutes each in each course like this one. I like the Pimsleur method, it really seems to work, but you are supposed to speak the phrases out loud. I am a bit embarrassed by that and I don't like to bother my spouse with it so I go out for a walk when I do a lesson. I also often back up to make sure I get all of the grammar exactly correct. I started with French 2 because I have some background in the language but never approached fluency. I always had trouble hearing the small and subtle sounds that are essential to the meaning of a sentence in French. Listening and speaking over the last 70+ lessons has made a huge difference in my ability to understand and speak the language. My spelling probably needs work as that isn't the strongest part of the Pimsleur method but these lessons have taken me a long way and I am now able to parse what I hear in French like never before. Many parts of the language are becoming second nature to me. It has taken me a lot of time and effort but going for walks is good for me and Pimsleur has proven that I really can learn French. All you have to do is devote some quiet time and this course really works.
I think that level 4 is quite useful for me. Of course, it requires more work. I am almost finished with level 3, and I just started level 4. I do repeat each lesson at least 2 times. Sometimes three. It pays off. Doing it once is just not enough in my book if you want to retain more of it. I learn a lot by repeating things. I tend to forget if it's not repeated a ton. While you're not getting many different verb forms i.e. you're not using much more than "to be" and "to have" and its various forms, and they are not trying to teach you tons of vocabulary, you learn enough vocabulary to feel you're making good progress and becoming grounded in terms of getting the French system in your head. Again, you may find level 4 hard. Repeat each level over and over. Go beyond what they basically ask you to do. They say to do only one level per day, but you can repeat that lesson more than once per day, and it's a great idea. I feel that I can think a lot more in French.
I have been studying French off and on for a few years, in addition to years ago as a college student, and although the Pimsleur vocabulary is often familiar, the lessons' pronunciation and repetition are very helpful, as are the fine points of grammar that they introduce, such as the correct use of the partitive and a gentle nudge into the dreaded subjonctif! Bravo, I will buy Level 5 too.
Not as advertised! When I searched for Pimsleur French Level 4, it said it was free with an Audible trial subscription. Naturally, I signed up for Audible. Once I did that, and tried to download the Pimsleur audiofile, amazon listed the price as $79.35. I am very unhappy, and will cancel my Audible subscription ASAP.
